Crocheting a Beach Bag

June 22, 2024

Summer time at the Jersey Shore and I need a bit of handwork. I enjoy all the steps in the fiber process, including creating the finished piece. Planning on using handspun, hand dyed wool from my stash.

Found this video on youtube and thought it would be fun to make. The pattern calls for 7 strands of different yarns, I am going to use the bulky yarns from coarser grade wool that I have.

Found the book at my library, Crochet Southwest Spirit : Over 20 Bohemian Crochet Patterns Inspired by the American Southwest. How awesome for the author to have her book in libraries.

According to this video, I need to fill a plastic grocery bag with the yarn – that will be the correct amount.

So, here we are. This is mostly Romney from New Jersey Farms. Now, to find the right crochet hook, I am not sure what Susan recommends will work for this wool thickness.

Ok … getting started. This really is super simple – just single crochets in the round. If you were using the seven strands like the author, it would most likely become a tangled mess periodically. I should be able to fly through this project. I do enjoy some fast simple projects after working on coats and sweaters for a while.

Making great progress in one day.

Did I say how relaxing it is to do single crochet mindlessly?

A couple more rows, and then the handles. I had some leather-style handles in my stash, so let’s use them.

And now, let’s pack the bag and head to the beach!
